Girls and Guns

If I was tossed a gun, should I have the knowledge and know how to use it? Or should being a female be enough of an excuse not to?

I was asked this question by @discoveryofignorance.tumblr.com tonight. It got me thinking….

At first glance, unless you are exposed to guns via family (usually for hunting purposes) or career (law enforcement/military), your knowledge of guns is lacking no matter your gender.

I hypothesis that women are unintentionally withheld from intial exposure because the two don’t seem to mix. Why does your Barbie doll loving princess decked out in pink need to know about grizzly hails of gunfire and polished triggers of metal? They have as much in common as fire and ice do at first thought. Also, maybe the historical precedent of males protecting females leads closer male relatives to see no need to teach their girl about protection when they believe that they’ll always be there to protect them.

Although noble thinking it is, I believe that all adults should learn how to protect themselves with and without the help of a firearm. To feel safe, you must learn how to be safe. Especially when you venture to life outside the four walls of your family home to live on your own.

To makeself clear, I don’t like guns. I have read too many horror stories of children being fatally injured by misplaced guns. But I think as an adult you should take aside the time to learn how to protect yourself (shoot a gun, take a self defense course, train your dog to guard) and never rely on others for your safety.
